SMW Local 206 Apprenticeship Program



OUR MISSION : The San Diego Sheet Metal JATC is dedicated to providing the men and women working in the Sheet Metal Industry with the training necessary to afford them the skills and knowledge to participate in our industry at the highest productivity level. To this end, the Labor / Management cooperative of this JATC will strive to provide students with relevant courses designed to present the latest technologies, materials, skills and instruction necessary in meeting our collective objectives.

  1. REQUIREMENTS —  All applicants will be required to take and pass a drug test. A physical exam and physical abilities test are required as well. Upon returning a negative drug test you will recieve directions and a time for your physical tests. Applicants must be physically able to perform the essential job functions of a sheet metal worker. 
  2. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS — Applicants must be at least 18 years of age; possess a High School diploma or an equivalent G.E.D. Certificate; and provide a copy of a photo ID and a proof of age document (i.e. birth certificate or passport).
  3. FILING AN APPLICATION — An application must be on file in order for the applicant to be eligible to take the entrance exam. You may come in person on either the 1st. or 3rd. Thursday of each month or complete the application on-line with the above link at any time.
    Copies of High School diploma and/or transcripts or G.E.D., Proof of Age document, and Photo ID must accompany the application or applicant will not be eligible to take the entrance exam. An applicant will not be admitted into the testing area unless he/she presents a valid Photo ID. 
  4. WRITTEN EXAMINATION — Applicants will be given written mathematics and skills competency tests, administered and scored by Palomar College. Should an applicant fail any part of the skills competency test, he/she may retest (entrance exam is typically administered twice per year). Should an applicant fail the math portion of the test, he/she may retest after providing proof of completion of Technical Math 40, or its equivalent, with a passing grade of "C" or better OR provide proof of completion of math tutoring.   5. ORAL INTERVIEW — Interviews will be scheduled for applicants who pass the entrance exam. If applicant has schooling beyond high school, such as adult school, correspondence courses, armed forces school or college, written verification including completion certificate and/or grade transcripts may be provided to the J.A.T.C. at the time of the interview. Letters of recommendation from current or previous employers will also be accepted.
  6. GENERAL INFORMATION — After the oral interviews are completed, applicants will be notified of their acceptance or rejection in writing via email. Highest scoring applicants will be put at the top of the eligibility list with lesser-scoring applicants ranked in descending order. When an applicant has been on the eligibility list for a two:year period without attaining placement, applicant will be removed from the list and so notified. If accepted into the apprenticeship, applicant must provide proof of a current California Driver License before being indentured into the program.
